My name is Katie Gammie and I love to draw. I’m an artist, designer and maker living in Markinch with my husband and three children. I studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art and Printmaking at the Royal College of Art and worked as a picture framer and property photographer and part time maker selling my bags and accessories at local markets, before having my children.
It was only after my children were born that I started drawing again, as a way of gaining some headspace in my chaotic home. This sparked something in me and reignited my making and so katie birdie was born.
I love to find all the hidden little details and colours on insects, birds and other nature that I come across on my daily travels and beyond. The hairy legs of a bee or the amazing jewel – like colours hidden in a starling until the light shines on it in just the right way. I then draw these intricacies with a super sharp pencil and my watercolours.
These drawings are just the starting point for my work. They stand alone but I also like to use them to create silk screen prints which enable me to play about with bold blocks of colour for a more graphic style.
